The springs do the lifting. Torsion springs twist on a bar over the door, while extension springs stretch alongside the side tracks. A standard spring lasts around ten thousand openings and closings, which a busy rental door can use up far faster than a family's.
Coastal humidity adds its own risk. A spring can corrode while the door sits shut, and the break often surfaces on the first use after a long absence. We replace springs as a matched set, chosen for the weight and height of the door, and rebalance it afterward.
Signs It Is Time to Arrange a Visit
A loud bang from the garage
Someone heard it from inside the house, or a neighbor mentioned it. A snapped spring usually makes a sharp crack and leaves the door very heavy.
The door will not lift
The opener hums or the door rises a few inches and drops. With a broken spring the opener cannot manage the full weight alone.
Rust shows on the coils
Orange scale or a visible gap in a coil on an idle door is a warning. It is best replaced before the next guest cycles it.
A gap between the coils
A torsion spring that has stretched or separated no longer carries its share. The door may look fine yet feel heavy or settle on its own.
What Happens on the Visit
- 1
Door secured and weight judged
We confirm the door is safely held, then measure and weigh it so the replacement springs match the load rather than fit approximately.
- 2
Pair replaced and tensioned
Both springs are swapped, wound with proper tools and checked, along with the cable drums, bearings and end brackets they work through.
- 3
Balance and reversal verified
With the opener disconnected the door should stay put halfway. We then reconnect and confirm the opener's limits and safety reverse still behave.
Questions From Owners Who Are Away
- Can a spring break while nobody uses the door?
- It can. Corrosion weakens the coils over time and metal fatigue does the rest, so a spring may fail overnight or only reveal itself when the door is first used after months. That is why a check before arrival is worth more than waiting for the first press of the remote.
- Does the opener's emergency cord help with a broken spring?
- Only partly. Pulling the cord disconnects the motor, but the door is then very heavy to lift by hand. Do not force it; leave it closed and arrange a visit. A technician can then replace the springs and rebalance the door without anyone risking injury or bending a panel.
- Why replace both springs?
- The second spring has worked just as hard and is probably close to the same point of failure. Replacing together keeps the door level and spares a second visit. Springs are also sized as a set to the door's weight, so matching them avoids an uneven, jerky lift afterward.
